To begin with, we must be clear that rats and rats are not the same species. The rat belongs to the genus Rattus which includes up to 57 different species such as Rattus rattus or Rattus norvegicus. The rat in turn belongs to the genus Mus and we find about 38 very different species including Mus musculus, known as the domestic rat.
Physically and in general, a rat can be distinguished from a rat by its size: rats can measure up to 30 centimeters, while rats are smaller, forming about 15 centimeters (although some can reach 20 centimeters).
However, the best way to physically distinguish a rat from a rat is the physiognomy it presents, giving small details: rats usually have larger legs and smaller mice. The rat’s ears are smaller than those of the rat.
Mice’s whiskers are generally longer than rats because their visual capacity is slightly reduced, which they compensate with a highly developed ear and smell.
The color of the rodent is another physical difference to consider, as the rats are generally dark (brown, black and gray) and the rats combine light and dark colors (brown, white, gray).
