In the early 1960s, breeder Julius Wipfel began making a series of crosses between puppies of two breeds, Chow Chow and Wolfspitz, to create a new breed of dog that combined the characteristics of the two dogs. The result was the Eurasier, a dog obtained by adding Samoyed to these previous crosses. This particular breed was recognized by the IFC in 1973.
The creation of the Eurasier breed was not easy, as it required the help of scientists specialized in canine genetics to end the problems associated with the original crosses. All this has been rigorously documented, thanks to the writing of several books on the origins and obstacles encountered in its creation.
- The Eurasier standard stipulates that it is a large dog.
- With males weighing between 23 and 32 kg and measuring at the cross between 52 and 60 centimeters.
- And females weighing 18 to 26 kilograms and a size between 48 and 56 centimeters.
The body of the Eurasier is elongated, solid and proportional. Among the characteristics of the Eurasier, it is worth noting that it has characteristics typical of the Samoyed, such as the face, elongated and endowed with powerful teeth. The long, dense, skin-covered tail is usually bent backwards, especially when in motion.
The head is shaped like a corner or triangle, with a pointed snout and a small stop. The eyes are medium and generally dark, while the ears, also of medium size, are triangular and erect, ending with a rounded tip. A peculiarity of the Eurasier breed is that some specimens have the blue tongue, remembering that they come from Chow Chow.
The hair of the eurasier is semi long and varies in length in different areas of the body. Therefore, it is shorter on the front of the legs and face, but considerably longer on the tail, neck, belly and back of the legs. In addition, it has an inner layer of wool that isolates it from the cold. As for Eurasier colors, almost all but liver, white or white spots are accepted.
Eurasier puppy
The Eurasier puppy also reminds us of the Samoyed puppy. The main difference lies in the colors, because the Eurasier cannot be white, besides the raised ears of the breed. So we are looking at a really adorable puppy, with rounded shapes and teddy bear appearance for its fur. In fact, Eurasier is on the list of dogs that look like bears.
If something characterizes a Eurasier is the fact that they are extremely adorable dogs, because their personality is captivating, being a loving dog, balanced, quiet and really sociable. Likewise, we are talking about a breed of dog perfect for a family with children, because Eurasier loves company, games and is the center of all eyes. In fact, another characteristic of the Eurasier Personality is that it does not tolerate loneliness well.
On the other hand, and although it is a sociable dog, it is common for its first contact with strangers to be prudent or fearful. Therefore, it is important to take the approach gradually, with great care and always respecting the time of the dog.
As we said, the Eurasier is a very playful dog, so much so that it can be quite naughty during the puppy phase. In addition, due to the typical eurasier temperament, if you get bored or do not receive proper physical and mental stimulation, you can become a destructive dog.
The dog Eurasier is one of the cleanest pomeranian dogs with less body odor. However, do not neglect your fur which, being long and dense, you have to brush it regularly, it is still better to brush it daily. Bathrooms, on the other hand, should only be given when needed, so don’t overdo it.
Although the care mentioned above is relevant, the most important care for the Eurasier dog is the care it needs in terms of company and social contact. As we said in the previous section, this is an extremely sensitive dog that cannot stand being alone. So much so that you can get angry and develop depression or destructiveness after long periods of time. In addition, it usually does not take long, so it is also recommended to walk in areas where you can enjoy your freedom, run and play with other dogs.
In addition, it is highly recommended to offer Eurasier various toys and intelligence games to keep you stimulated at home. Also, playing with it indoors is a great option.
Despite the qualities of the Eurasier, the race has the peculiarity of being truly stubborn and independent, so it tends to obey only the person who considers its guide and reference. In addition, it should be noted that your training requires a lot of patience and constancy, because if you relax, all your work can be lost in seconds. Of course, you should never resort to any form of violence. The right and appropriate approach is to base the sessions and exercises on positive and respectful training techniques.
The above characteristics are explained by a phenomenon called neothenia, which refers to a heterosynccrony or a change in the rhythm and organic functioning, which makes your body mature with a great delay. Due to this phenomenon, it is a very independent hierarchical dog that barks very little, so you don’t have to worry about noise.
On the other hand, it is desirable for all family members to participate in their education to ensure that Eurasier obeys everyone equally. As soon as the dog arrives home, it is advisable to start his education with socialization, since it is a dog that is usually reserved for foreigners. Gradually, you will be introducing the basic rules of coexistence, the most primary commands and, over time, you will be able to add more advanced tricks and controls. Of course, you should not forget to teach Eurasier where to meet your needs.
Although in the first moments after the beginning of the breed, these dogs suffered serious congenital diseases, mainly due to inbreeding, the current breed is much healthier and more robust. However, these animals have several conditions to which they are more inclined than other breeds, as we will see below.
Something that seems to affect the eurasier are rheumatological diseases, that is, those that affect the joints, and have a great tendency compared to other breeds with characteristics similar to developing this type of disease. One of them is the well-known hip dysplasia, which cannot be completely avoided but has better prognosis and better progression when diagnosed early. They also tend to suffer the lauxedle of the patella and elbow. Other diseases typical of Eurasier dogs are hypothyroidism, which affects the functioning of the thyroid gland, and eye disorders, both entropion and ectropion.
To make all these diseases as problematic as possible, it is best to consult your veterinarian regularly, performing extensive diagnostic tests. In addition, appropriate preventive measures should be taken, i.e. administer appropriate vaccines if necessary, perform periodic internal and external deworming, clean and control the eyes, ears and mouth, and follow the instructions of the veterinarian. This way, you can make sure your Eurasier enjoys a full and happy life.
