The causes of dog bite are numerous and a fundamental part of the diagnosis is to distinguish whether it is a disease or a behavioral problem. A behavioral cause is usually diagnosed when all other pathologies have been ruled out.

An animal with this problem initiates a vicious cycle of bite because it bites or licks because something bothers it, the wound that causes it worsens and disturbs it even more, causing it to bite more, causing a self-trauma. In the worst situations, it can create secondary bacterial infections (surface or deep pyodermatitis) and darken and harden the skin.

If you want to know why the dog licks so much or what it means when the dog bites a lot, we give you some of the causes of the scratches and dog bites:

Dry or dehydrated skin can make the animal uncomfortable, causing it to scratch and bite.

Dog pain can be caused by trauma such as an insect bite, a cut, an injury, very long nails or a fracture. In addition, pain, bone or joint problems can also be the cause of the dog biting his paw.

Itching in dogs, in addition to being very uncomfortable for the animal, can jeopardize the physical and mental health of the fur. It can be caused by flea or tick infestation, bite of other insects, dermatological diseases such as scabies, dermatophytosis/dermatomyasis or food, environmental allergies or by contact with a chemical/toxic.

Many dogs develop what is called DAPP (allergic flea dermatitis) in which they have an allergic reaction to the saliva components of the flea when itches. In dogs, it usually manifests itself in the form of intense itching, in which the dog bites and rubs the soil with discomfort. Skin lesions appear more in the lumbar and base of the tail, reaching the abdomen and thighs, where the skin is red, clean and with scabs. The bite of other insects, such as bees or melons, is usually an allergic reaction located at the site of the sting.

Food or environmental allergies (atopia) involve the immune system causing dermatological and gastrointestinal manifestations. Although food allergy is not seasonal and the frequency of signs is related to the frequency of contact with allergenic food, atopia is seasonal and usually intensifies in spring and summer. The areas of the dog’s body most affected are the ears, face, lower back, armpits, groin and limbs. As for cats, the injuries are more concentrated on the head and face. If this problem is suspected, consider bilateral ear infections, seborrhea (skin peeling), alopecia (hair loss), papules, pustules, erythema, ulcers or abrasions.

Atopic dermatitis is usually caused by pollen, fungi and mites. It appears in dogs from one to three years old, when they are still young. Dermatological diseases caused by mites or fungi cause alloptic (hairless) regions and may or may not cause itching. The veterinarian should rule out these dermatological causes by cytology, skin scraping or specific fungal screening tests.

First, it is essential to eliminate all pathological causes that can cause a dog to bite to bleed. If it is related to pain, the cause should be removed and treated, regardless of the source. Itching must be controlled so that the animal does not have discomfort in its daily life. And if it is of allergic origin, it is necessary to know what allergen is in question and try to reduce contact with it, whether food or environmental.
