Long before the dog entered space on September 19, 1783, the first manned flight of a balloon [4], in France, had guinea pigs, a duck, a rooster and the Montauciel sheep (meaning “Heaven”). The hot air balloon took off from the gardens of the Palace of Versailles on a flight that lasted 8 minutes, landed safely and all survived. The invention was made by the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph and James and King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were spectators of the scene.
She was literally an “old lady.” Aside from bad puns, though not recorded by Guinness, methuselina sheep became known for being the oldest in the world when she turned 25, hoping for a sheep aged 10 to 12. Methuselina had a tragic end and died when she fell off a cliff.
Although many people call all animals of the species “sheep”, this name is actually called to refer to females, while males are sheep, the young are lambs and the collective is called herd.
