In general, we differentiate three types of dog hair: short, medium and long. Each of them needs a specific type of brush and different brushing frequencies. Here’s what kind of brush to use to comb your dog if he has short, medium or long hair.
Short-haired dogs require much less care than long-haired dogs. Because they have a light, dense coat, they need a maximum of two or three brushes per week. In breeds considered short hair, there are different measurements and characteristics of the hairs that will determine even whether to brush two or three brushes per week. For example, the chihuahua is a dog with short hair and usually loses a lot of hair, so you will need more brushing than a Dalmatian or boxer, which does not lose so much hair, for example.
Dogs with this type of hair only need brushes to remove excess hair, as they do not have the ability to accumulate knots or dirt. In this case, we will need a brush of rubber or plastic bristles, to avoid damaging the skin of our dog and pull hairs that we should not. In addition, these brushes are very easy to clean and maintain in perfect condition.
Medium-haired dogs such as the German shepherd, border collie or golden retriever, which have more hair than the previous ones, need at least four brushes per week. If the tutor has enough time to brush his hair once a day, his four-legged companion will thank us and we can keep the house clean at all times.
Because they have longer hair, thicker and denser than short hair hair, these dogs need a bristle brush and fine metal joints, known as dog knives, to remove accumulated dead hair. These dogs usually lose a lot of hair and, if you don’t remove them, they will accumulate throughout the house.
Long-haired puppies are the ones who need more attention when taking care of their fur, as they usually form more knots, accumulate dirt and, in most cases, lose a lot of hair. Thus, the keeper must brush the dog’s fur every day, especially after each walk. However, in Animal Expert we recommend combining daily brushing at home with at least one dog session per month.
For dogs with longer fur and delicate skin, such as Yorkshire, we need a double-sided brush with round hair on one side and a harder synthetic fur on the other. Thus, first you can pass the stripe of round hair, untangle the hair very carefully, remove the dead hair, then move to the other side to give softness and shine to the hair.
For long-haired dogs with thicker, less delicate skin, we can first use a metal bristle brush, such as the one we use for medium hair, to untangle and remove dirt easily. Because it has a greater amount of hair, brushing should be done very carefully, so as not to hurt the animal with the pulls.
Smooth-haired dogs need daily brushing to avoid knots and remove dead hair. The best brush for shih tzu dogs that have straight hair, for example, is the brush called Furminator. This is the best option to avoid damaging the hair, in addition to preventing irritation of the animal’s skin. Another advantage of this type of brush is that it allows the production of natural oils that slow hair loss and stimulate it to become silkier and much brighter.
Finally, it is important to differentiate the hairs of water dogs, which are characterized by being very curly and very dense. Dogs Poodle and Bichon Frisé, among others, need a brush very different from those seen in previous articles. To untangle your hair without damaging or tearing it, removing dirt and keeping it healthy and strong, we will need a thick and separate metal comb, also called stripper.
Brushing should be done with this comb every day, after each exit, to avoid the formation of knots. Although they are dogs that do not usually lose hair, they usually generate many knots, accumulate sand, soil, etc. This way, if you have a water dog and you realize that it is losing a lot of hair, you should take it to the vet to examine it and find out if it has any nutritional deficiencies.
