In the human digestive system, we find specific enzymes that are used to metabolize and synthesize certain foods, called cytochrome P450, that are not present in dogs.
They lack enzymes to metabolize chocolate and cannot digest theobromine and caffeine present in cocoa. High-dose chocolate is so harmful to our dog that it can cause serious poisoning and even death.
Due to the lack of enzymes, the dog takes on average between 1 and 2 days to digest the chocolate. During this process, if the dog has consumed a small amount, we may have vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, tremors and seizures. In the most severe cases, it can cause respiratory or heart failure.
